learn thai time

Hello everyone,

Once we started talking about the words of time we have more to talk about. In this blog I would like to introduce you to the word “ago”.

ago in Thai is “tîi-lέεw” (ที่แล้ว)

for example:

two days ago                        = sǒrng wan tîi-lέεw (สองวันที่แล้ว)

a week ago, last week        = aa-tít tîi-lέεw (อาทิตย์ที่แล้ว)

a month ago, last month = duan tîi-lέεw (เดือนที่แล้ว)

a year ago, last year          = bpii tîi-lέεw  (ปีที่แล้ว)

Let’s see some sentences.

I bought a new bag last week      = chán súu grà-bpǎo mài aa-tít tîi-lέεw

I went to Paris three years ago  = pǒm bpai Paris sǎam bpii tîi-lέεw

I was very sick two months ago = chán mâi sà-baai sǒrng duan tîi-lέεw

Thai language is not difficult. Keep practicing :)

learn thai time

Hello everyone,

Since we talked about the words of time in my last blog. I would like to continue a little bit more :)

Today                        = Wan-níi

Yesterday               =  Mûa-waan níi

Tomorrow              =  Prûng- níi

Let’s see how we form tenses with these words.

 I will go to see a movie tomorrow.

chán jà (will) bpai duu (watch, see)  nǎng (movie) Prûng- níi

 Yesterday I was unwell.

Mûa-waan níi Pǒm(I for male speaker) mâi sà-baai

What day is today?

Wan-níi wan à-rai

Thai language is not difficult. Keep practicing everyone:)

Learn Thai Grammar: The words of time (1)

learn thai time

Hello everyone,

After telling you guys abou telling Thai time earlier, today I would like to talk more about words of time. This will be very useful in your daily conversation.

In English you have in the morning, at noon, in the evening etc. Let’s see what we have.

In Thai we don’t need different prepositions when talking about different time of the day like in or at.

We use only one preposition which is dtorn

in the morning         =        dtorn châao

at noon                       =         dtorn săai

in the afternoon     =         dtorn bàai

in the evening         =         dtorn yen

at night                      =          dtorn dùek

Let’s see some examples using the words of time.

What do you eat in the morning?

 dtorn châao Kun gin À-rai ?

I have coffee in the afternoon.

 Pŏm gin ga-fae dtorn bàai

She went to bed late at night

kăo norn  dtorn dùek

**Please note that if you would like to say “she went to bed late” then you can leave out the word “dtorn” in this situation.

Learn Thai – Time (2)

October 8th, 2010

Learn Thai time

Hi everybody,

How are you getting on with telling day time from my last blog? I hope you are doing great:)

Now let’s continue to the night time. We will start counting from 1 – 5 again and we use the word “tûm” for telling time at night between 7 – 11 p.m.

For example:

7 p.m.    =    1 tûm = nùng tûm

9 p.m.   =  3 tûm = sǎam tûm

10 p.m. =   4 tûm = sìi tûm

and it’s time for Cinderella to return back home, she heard the first stroke of midnight!

It is “tîang-kuun“.

Please note that we don’t really say ‘hòk tûm for 12p.m.

For 1-5 a.m. we have the word “dtii

1 a.m. = dtii nùng

2 a.m. = dtii sǒrng

5 a.m. = dtii hâa

Please notice that when using “dtii” we put it at the beginning then follow by number 1-5, not like “tûm that  the number comes first then put tûm at the end.

It is 9 p.m.   =  3 tûm  = sǎam tûm

It is 3 a.m.   = dtii 3     = dtii sǎam

Hoorey! now you have got to tell the Thai time all 24 hour clock. Before I let you guy go through it over again, let me ask “What time is it?”

gìi moong léaw ? or

gìi tûm léaw ? (at night only)

Learn Thai: Telling the Time…

June 15th, 2010

Learn Thai, telling time

Telling the time in Thai is complicated by the fact that the hour word

equivalent to “o’clock” in English, varies according to the time of day and,

with it, the position of the hour number :

Hours

dti:+ number                            1  a.m.-5 a.m.              dti:  nùng                     ตีหนึ่ง

number + mo:ng  chá:w           6 a.m.- 11a.m.             hòk  mo:ng  chá:w       หกโมงเช้า

bà:y + number +mo:ng            1 p.m.-4p.m.                bà:y  sǒr:ng  mo:ng      บ่ายสองโมง

number + mo:ng  yen               5 p.m. -6 p.m.              hâ:- mo:ng  yen            ห้าโมงเย็น

number + tûm                         7 p.m.-11 p.m.             7pm = núng  tûm         หนึ่งทุ่ม

tiâng  ku:n                                midnight                       เที่ยงคืน

tiâng  (wan)                             midday                         เที่ยง(วัน)

NOTE : dti: and  bà:y appear before the number ; dti: and  tûm do not occur with mo:ng

Half- hours

Half-past the hour is expressed as Hour time + krûng (half) .For the hours from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., however, the word chá:w is usually omitted.

3.30 a.m.                     dti:  sǎ:m  krûng                       ตีสามครึ่ง

10.30 p.m.                   sì:  tûm  krûng                          สี่ทุ่มครึ่ง

Quarter hours and minutes past/ to the hour

There is no special word for “quarter past” or “quarter to” the hour. Minutes past the hour are expressed as Hour Time + Number + na:-ti:( minutes);

10.15 a.m.                   sìp  mo:ng  sìp  hâ:  na:-ti:                   สิบโมงสิบห้านาที

Minutes to the hour are expressed as i:k (Further, More) + Number + na:-ti: (minutes)+Hour Time;

10.45 a.m.                   ì:k  sìp hâ: na:-ti: sìp-èt mo:ng              อีกสิบห้านาทีสิบอ็ดโมง
